
Summer
has arrived in Packer Country, and the warm weather, sunshine
and longer days are combining with some of the best natural
golf terrain in the Midwest to create a haven for golfers looking
to test their skills.
With more than 20 spectacular courses ranging
from simple par 3s perfect for beginners, to challenging
courses filled with bunkers and tight fairways, Packer Country’s
lineup of golf experiences is the perfect way to escape from
it all – at least for a few hours.
The first stop for any golf fan in Packer
Country is the Brown County Golf Club (920/497-1731)
in Oneida. Rated as one of the nation’s top 75 public
courses by Golf Digest for the past 15 years, the 6,392-yard
layout follows the undulating landscape creating scenic tee
shots and challenging play. Located nearby, Thornberry
Creek (920/434-7501) recently added nine holes,
designed by Rick Jacobson, for a total of 27 holes including
18 holes of championship-caliber terrain.
For
those looking to enjoy one of the best golf resorts in
the Midwest, the Fox
Hills Resort (920/755-2831) in Mishicot treats
golfers to 45 holes of challenging golf and spectacular
resort amenities. The 18-hole National course is sure to
put any golfer’s skills to the test as it stretches
over nearly 7,000 yards of the region’s varied terrain
complete with strategically-placed bunkers, tiered greens
and manicured fairways.
Other spectacular Packer Country golf experiences
include the old country beauty of Hilly Haven Golf
Course (920/336-6204) and the rolling landscape
of Highland Ridge (920/337-9986) in DePere,
the tight wooded fairways of The Woods

The summer golf season peaks from Aug.
7-11, when some of the top names in LPGA history take to
the fairways and greens of Green Bay Country Club for the Copps
Great Lakes Classic (1-800-450-4722). The event
includes a ladies-only pro-am on Wednesday, the Oneida Bingo & Casino
pro-am on Thursday and 54-holes of golf action as the ladies
of the Women’s Senior Golf Tour drive, chip and putt
for the $75,000 first place prize. Since its start in 2000,
the annual field has included top names such as Nancy Lopez,
Vicki Fergon and the 2001 champion Holis Stacy.
