Holiday Celebrations 2001Holiday spirit fills the air as attractions throughout the Green Bay area put on their holiday best to celebrate the season.

Magical displays of twinkling lights, spectacular holiday performances, historic visits to holidays past and exciting New Year's celebrations make the holiday season in the Green Bay area one of the best times of the year.

N.E.W. ZooWildlife and wild lights come together to transform the N.E.W. Zoo into a winter wonderland of sparkling lights and holiday festivities during its "Walk the Wild Lights" display. (920/434-7841) Running weekends until Dec. 23, visitors can wander through more than 200,000 twinkling lights or hop on a horse-drawn hayride and enjoy the holidays with family and friends. The Green Bay Botanical Garden also comes to life as 200,000 lights create an enchanting holiday getaway on weekends through Dec. 23. (920/490-9457)

Take a step back into holidays gone by during the "Spirit of Christmas Past" at Heritage Hill State Historical Park on Dec. 7-9 and Dec. 14-16. (1-800-721-5750) Tour historic buildings decorated in conventional holiday style while talking to interpreters about present and present holiday traditions.

The downtown streets of De Pere come to life with thousands of white lights twinkling off the snow during De Pere's Celebration of Lights, through Dec. 31. Local business owners adorn their store fronts to see who can give their building the most holiday spirit. The celebration is highlighted by Santa's House at White Pillars Museum and horse-drawn carriage rides through the city the weekend of Dec. 13-15.

Holiday cheer fills the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts during the month of December. (1-800-328-TKTS) A holiday favorite comes to the center as Nebraska Theatre Caravan presents "A Christmas Carol" on Dec. 12 and 13. Music lovers are taken on a holiday journey as the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra performs a medley of holiday favorites with the Dudley Birder Chorale and the Performer's Workshop on Dec. 7 and 8.

New Year's Eve is no time to sit at home with the kids. The YMCA in downtown Green Bay opens its doors for the family friendly Firstar Eve celebration. (1-800-449-9383) Gym games, horse-drawn wagon rides, swimming, music and fireworks make the annual event a favorite for kids and adults alike.
