The
sounds of cheering crowds fill the air as nearly 6,000 runners
take to the legendary streets of Green Bay in pursuit of glory
and personal bests during the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon on
June 23, 2002.
Participants in the full marathon test their
endurance on 26.2 miles of pavement, while runners looking
for a shorter experience have the opportunity to compete in
either a 13.1-mile half-marathon or a 3.1-mile run/walk. Even
the track stars of tomorrow get into the fun with the half-mile
WPS Kids' Power Run.
This
year, runners from around the world are being greeted by a
brand new course prime for exciting competition and record-breaking
speed. Continuing in the young tradition of the race, the extremely
flat course makes its way through the All-American city from
the starter's gun at Main and Adams to the finish line at Cherry
and Washington. Along the way runners pass legendary Green
Bay landmarks including the Ray Nitschke Bridge, St. Norbert
College and the hallowed grounds of Lambeau Field.
Scoring is handled by a high-tech scoring
system using computer chips fitted to all runners to produce
the most accurate timing possible. The race is also sanctioned
by the United States Track and Field Standards, and participants
can use the marathon as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
Along the route, runners are met with 28
stations with water and Ultima Sports Drink, 10 medical stations
and sponge/fruit stations. In true Green Bay fashion, runners
are even greeted by a giant tailgate party complete with plenty
of music, food, drink and fun at the finish line.
Race sponsor Cellcom is once again making
it possible for runners' friends and families to take part
in the race with Cellcom Cellular Phone Service Convenience
Stations along the course giving participants the opportunity
to call home during the race. For those runners who want to
stay in the heat of the race, the Cellcom Biking Team will
even dial-up and hand runners the phone so they can talk as
they stride for the finish.
